Abstract

While studying Shih Ching (the Book of Poetry ), one has to, first of all, possess a good knowledge of its artistic devices; and ch’ung chang hu tsu (the use of mutually supplementary chapters in basically the same form with only slight variations) is one of its poetic crafts. Former scholars, who either neglected this skill, or only gave some uncertain comments, or even failed to understand its function, had to grapple with the meanings of the verses in Shih Ching yet often with little success. This paper, applying both theory and evidences, means to explicate this artistic method. Its six chapters are: (1) Preface, (2) Some comments on Hu Wen (corresponding words in the couplets) and Hu Tsu , (3) Ch’ung Chang Fu T’a and Its Way of Revealing the Meaning of the Verses (4) Some Comments on Ku Chieh Kang’s Averment that Ch’ung Chang Fu T’a was Effected by Ancient Musicians, (5) the Types and Contentsof  Ch’ung Chang Hu Tsu, and (6) Conclusion. The writer of this paper since rely hopes that it may prove to be of some help to the Shih Ching scholars.
